Director Nneka Onuorah takes an in-depth look at the internalized hetero-normative gender roles that have become all too familiar within the African American lesbian and bisexual community. Onuorah shows how these behaviors reproduce the homophobic oppression and masculine privilege of the straight world, while looking for solutions in compelling discussions with community members. Self-identified studs—and the women who love them—discuss hypocrisy in terms of gender roles, performative expectations, and the silent disciplining that occurs between community members. This film features many queer celebrities, including actress Felicia “Snoop” Pearson from the critically acclaimed HBO drama The Wire, and Lea DeLaria from Netflix’s Orange Is the New Black, living daily with opinions about how identity should be portrayed. Onuorah’s engaging documentary shines a light on the relationships and experiences within the queer black female community, intersecting race, gender and sexuality. Just Films is a collaboration of six organizations in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania committed to women, girls, gender equity, and social justice: Black Women’s Policy Center, Chatham University Art & Design Department and Women’s Institute, MomsWork Powered by NCJW Pittsburgh, Women and Girls Foundation, Women’s Law Project, and YWCA Greater Pittsburgh. Using a transnational feminist framework, Ternikar's talk will use narratives, and feminist theories to highlight how autoethnography and participant observation are important feminist methods in critical feminist food studies. This interdisciplinary project expands on how we understand the role of food in building communities. Immigration continues to be a debated issue across the US, but especially in southern states, where food can be used to understand how Muslim immigrant women navigate community and identity and experiences of belonging and unbelonging. Dr. Farha Ternikar is a Visiting Scholar with the Women's Institute and the Rachel Carson Visiting Scholar at the Falk School of Sustainability this year. She is a Professor of Sociology and Director of Gender, Women and Sexuality Studies at Le Moyne College. She serves on the board of ASFS (Association for the Study of Food and Society and the WOCLP advisory board for NWSA (National Women's Studies Association). During this webinar, we will discuss nuanced differences among various tests deployed for determining the status of workers as either employees or independent contractors, including discussion of the January 9, 2024, Department of Labor ruling favoring employee status. These designations have substantial consequences in the event of misclassification. We'll also discuss the Pros & Cons of Each: - How to decide whether to hire a contractor vs. employee; - Documentation necessary to prove workers qualify as independent contractors; - Benefits of hiring an independent contractor or employee; and - When you would want to hire an employee instead of a contractor.
